Phoenix, AZ, June 16, 2010 — Hummingbirds are swarming over San Diego County’s backyard gardens as spring flowers are in full bloom. Hummingbirds will notice food sources that contain ultra-violet colors, such as red, first before they notice others because they see in ultra-violet. The red monkey flower is one of their favorite sources of nectar along the coastal trip. The desert also attracts the migrating hummingbirds, thanks to its blooming chuparosa and ocotillo.
As mentioned previously, instinctively, hummingbirds notice ultra-violet colors such as the ever-popular red, pink, and orange as a food sources before they will notice other colors. Those interested in attracting hummingbirds should keep these ultra-violet colors in mind when planting flowers and hanging hummingbird feeders.
However, as the temperatures increase during the hot season, attracting hummingbirds should not be the only concern. Hummingbird food can easily spoil, causing danger and even death to hummingbirds.
To ensure the hummingbird food is fresh, it should be replaced every 2-3 days, and even more often in high temperatures. Also, the hummingbird feeders should be cleaned a few times a week to prevent bacteria growth.
There are hummingbird feeders available that not only attract hummingbirds, but also make cleaning and filling easy. They fill from the top and feature a sports-bottle like function. To fill them, the nectar reservoir is first closed by pushing down. Then, the wide-mouth cap at the top is unscrewed and the nectar poured in, which doesn’t require a funnel. Finally, the cap is replaced and the nectar reservoir is pulled up to release the hummingbird food. This advanced technology eliminates the need to turn the feeder over to fill. Also, designed with fewer parts, these hummingbird feeders are easy to clean.
