Going Green for commuters can be as simple as brewing their own premium coffee at home, rather than stopping at their local coffee shop every morning.
Allentown, NJ, November 24, 2009 — Commuters contribute greenhouse gases and increase the rate of global warming when making their routine morning coffee stop. By brewing morning coffee at home commuters can go green by reducing vehicle starts and stops, going out of their way to find parking at the coffee shop. Commuters can drive less by avoiding stops on the way to work.Nancy McGuckin, a travel behavior analyst cited a report in “National Household Travel Survey” (U.S. Department of Transportation, 2005) as the basis of her conclusions that morning rush hour traffic is worsened by stops by daily morning gourmet coffee stops.McGuckin called it, “The Starbucks Effect.”
The research cites running additional errands in the morning on the way to work as adding to traffic congestion, because people drive further to stop at the dry cleaners or at local coffee shops. Additional commuter stops reduce gas mileage, but brewing coffee at home saves gas and time, while at the same time reducing greenhouse gases.
There are additional benefits of brewing gourmet coffee at home. Jamaica Blue Mountain gourmet coffee, one of the best whole bean coffees, costs about $36 a Pound is only . .36 cents per cup when brewed at home. Kopi Luwak, the most expensive coffee in the world at $175 per pound, is only about $1.75 per cup when brewed at home!
The finest gourmet coffee beans make a cup at home for between .15 to .50 cents a cup. Gourmet Coffee drinkers have become accustomed to paying $2 or more per cup for fresh brewed coffees at trendy high-end coffee shops. Gourmet coffee afficianados know that premium home-brewed coffee costs as little as 25 cents or less per cup.
Many coffee producers suggest 1 tablespoon fresh ground gourmet coffee beans per 6 ounce cup of water. Starbucks suggests stronger coffees at 2 tablespoons per 6 ounce cup. Gourmet coffee (16 Ounces or 1 Lb.) divided by 1 1/2 Ounces comes to around 10 pots of 10 cups (6 Ounce cups) or 100 cups for the cost of one pound of gourmet coffee beans. At the average of 1.5 tablespoons per 6 ounce cup and average size of 12 ounce coffee mug, you can expect 50 cups of home brewed coffee per pound of gourmet beans!
Gourmet coffee drinkers usually don’t think about the cost of their daily coffee in terms of how much it costs to brew at home versus several cups a day at premium coffee shop prices.
