COALITION FOR ENERGY EFFICIENT ELECTRIC TANKLESS WATER HEATERS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Electric Tankless Water Heater Manufacturers Form Coalition to Achieve ENERGY STAR(R) Certification
Win Major Victory Adding ETWH to HOMESTAR Legislation
WASHINGTON, March 30, 2010 – A group of industry-leading companies has formed the Coalition for Energy Efficient Electric Tankless Water Heaters (CEEETWH) to educate consumers and policymakers on the energy-efficient technology, as well as achieve ENERGY STAR® certification. The coalition will educate the public and key U.S. government and non-government agencies on the savings opportunities that electric tankless water heaters can provide to consumers.
Just this week, the Coalition was successful in getting language sponsored by Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) to include electric tankless water heaters in the HOMESTAR legislation as it was successfully marked up by the House Energy and Commerce’s Energy panel and advanced to the full committee for consideration.
The Coalition was formed by industry-leading companies, including: American Heat, American Hometec, Bosch, EcoSmart, Eemax, Hubbell, Keltech, Niagara Industries, and Skye International. Its leadership team consists of Kevin Ruppelt, Coalition Chairman and President and CEO of Eemax, Inc., and Salo Zelermyer, Coalition Director. The Coalition is represented by Bracewell & Guiliani, a firm widely known in the energy industry and efficiency issues.
Electric Tankless Water Heaters (ETWHs) provide significant energy efficiency, cost savings, and water conservation to millions of consumers in the United States who do not have access to oil or gas fuels. The ETWHs meet all ENERGY STAR criteria by operating at 99% efficiency – one of the highest efficiency levels of any fuel source driven water heater including gas water heaters, meaning approximately 99% of the power used goes into heating water and is not wasted. With ETWHs, water is heated directly without the use of a traditional storage tank that is commonly found in the basement or utility rooms. Traditional storage tank water heaters will run and reheat water even when not in use – wasting money and consuming energy. At the same time, water temperature is lost while sitting and traveling through pipes. With the electric tankless heaters, when a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit. An electric element heats the water immediately with minimal wait time to the desired temperature. As a result, the tankless water heaters deliver a constant supply of hot water, eliminating wasted water, saving money, while being GREEN at the same time.
“Approximately 50% of Americans heat water using electricity; therefore, it’s our goal for them to heat their water using efficient technology,” Ruppelt said. “Many Americans become outraged when they hear that gas tankless water heaters received ENERGY STAR recognition, yet electric tankless with higher efficiency has not. It just doesn’t seem right to exclude ETWHs from the ENERGY STAR program.”
Zelermyer added, “We would like to see a distinct category for ETWHs that compares their energy savings and cost effectiveness to other tankless water heaters on the market. Such a system would meet the criteria established by the ENERGY STAR program, provide Electric Tankless Water Heaters with fair and equal treatment, and further our nation’s goal of increased energy efficiency.”
Among a number of important issues, the coalition is currently focused on energy efficiency legislation moving forward in Congress, such as BUILDING STAR (commercial buildings) and HOMESTAR (residential). As mentioned earlier, just this week the Coalition was successful in getting language sponsored by Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) to include electric tankless water heaters in the HOMESTAR legislation.
About ENERGY STAR
In 1992 the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced ENERGY STAR as a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. ENERGY STAR provides a trustworthy label on over 60 product categories (and thousands of models) for the home and office. ENERGY STAR has successfully delivered energy and cost savings across the country, saving businesses, organizations, and consumers about $19 billion in 2008 alone.
