Poems Are Dedicated to Exploring Life’s Universal Experiences and Emotions

Growing up on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in rural southern Alabama, imagination was the key to Duncan’s childhood. Moving to Birmingham in the mid-1950s in the midst of the civil rights movement with a father who was a fiery Nazarene minister led to a sheltered, strict upbringing with deep roots in religious beliefs and a deeper passion for an expressive outlet - writing poetry.
“Journeys from My Pen to Your Heart” begins when life was young and innocent, telling the stories of life past. Duncan takes readers through an array of universal life experiences as they experience her joys and sorrows along the journey.
Just as her poetry begins with her childhood, her book concludes by addressing human mortality and all of the emotions one experiences when faced with death. Duncan’s whimsical, emotional, sentimental and at times thought-provoking words will inspire readers to pause and think about their own lives as they connect with her experiences:
Welcome to my world. Come on in and stay awhile. There’s a chair beside the window waiting just for you by the fire where you’ll be warm. Take your time with every page, lest you miss a line or two. Take a journey in your mind… that’s all I ask of you. You may laugh or you may cry… sometimes you may even wonder why. If you do I’ve done my part, reaching deep inside my heart, so welcome to my world I’m so glad you came my way. You can come back any time… the love will never go away.
Stay Awhile
