Avoiding the Unexpected Psychological Changes of Retirement

King City, Ontario, July 10, 2009 — It is no surprise that as the millions in the generation known for rejecting and redefining traditional values are starting to retire, the concept of retirement is also changing. In the new book, “Psychology of Executive Retirement: From Fear to Passion” (published by iUniverse), author Doug Treen offers an original look at retirement by challenging baby boomers to prepare for this life change psychologically as well as financially.

“Psychology of Executive Retirement” describes that often self-identity is sacrificed during an executive’s career due to demands for professional and corporate group-think conformity and meeting collective criteria. Success is reflected in corporate rewards such as titles, promotions and raises. These rewards set retirees up for later distress when their identities can no longer be reinforced by corporate rewards or a collective purpose. Treen aims to help readers avoid retirement shock by encouraging them to apply life planning and instead see retirement as an opportunity for self-discovery, authenticity, creativity and originality. Treen writes:

“Personal discovery of the freedom of one’s authentic self leads to the possibility of overcoming the fear of retirement. As opposed to the traditional retirement of passivity or having the self-identity of a has-been, the book shows the executive the path to personal empowerment and enlightenment. This opens the door to the inner passion and personal power of purpose based on one’s authentic values which is much more empowering than the power based on an executive’s position and title. As opposed to losing self-identity and esteem the retired executive transcends the limitations of the collective professional identity for the freedom of individuality.”
