Protagonist Lorne Bennett, a movie star who goes by the name “The West Side Kid” to his fans, suddenly becomes a wanted man in the real-life criminal sense. When his thirty-one-year-old wife, Aurora, is murdered in their elegant Manhattan apartment, he comes under suspicion and flees, leaving behind a successful career and his four-month-old daughter, Laura.
Fast forward to twenty-two years later. Bennett is living quietly in Arizona when a freak car accident throws him into the spotlight and he’s forced to take off again. He knows the police are on his tail, but he has no idea he’s also being tracked down by his daughter who hungers to know all she can about that night in the apartment when she was just an infant and lost both her mother and father. It’s her obsession to understand what occurred that puts her own life in danger.
“The West Side Kid” takes the reader on an exciting journey, from Arizona to Las Vegas to New York City, in a relentless search for answers. Cardinale has written another captivating novel that is entertaining and suspenseful. “With all the dire news out there, is there a better time to escape for awhile into a good mystery?” he wonders.
